Anne Ballantine Murphy was the daughter of John Murphy and Anne Ballantine. She was born about 1795 at Ayrfield, and died 11 May, 1820. She is buried in the family cemetery at Ayrfield.
Anne Ballantine Murphy married William Luttrell Rogers of Princeton, New Jersey in 1818, a few years after the War of 1812 which saw this young man serving in Virginia as an officer in the United States Army. He wrote a nice letter to Bishop Meade in March 1857 describing some of his service with 36th Regiment of the United States Infantry in the spring of 1814, observing British fleet movements on the Yeocomico. During this time he became acquainted with Yeocomico Church (the subject of his letter) and with the Murphy family, as Ayrfield adjoins the church property. I suspect it was during this time that Mr. Rogers met Anne Ballantine Murphy. Their marriage was short lived, as she died in 20 May, 1820 at the tender age of 25. They did have two children, though:
John Murphy Rogers (married cousin Jane Murphy)
William Henry Rogers (died in infancy)
Is Anne the daughter of Anne Ballentine and John Murphy and is this Anne Ballentine who married John Murphy and was this Anne also the wife of John Turberville, the John Turberville who married, also, Martha Corbin, i.e., JohnTurberville b.1737 d. 1799 and Martha Corbin b. 1738 d. 1792, this John and Martha being the parents of George Lee Turberville b. 1760 d. 1798, this George marrying Elizabeth Tayloe “Betty” Corbin and George and Betty being the parents of our Martha Felicia Turberville who married our Maj. Robert Beale?
OK, this isn’t quite that complicated, I think. 😉
The wife of John Ballantine was named Anne. Anne what, we don’t know. She was the mother of the Anne Ballantine to whom John Murphy was wed in 1787, and the grandmother of the Anne Ballantine Murphy (Rogers) to whom this page is devoted. After John Ballantine’s death between 1788 and 1792 and Martha Corbin’s death in 1792, Anne Ballantine (widow) and John Turberville were married. Anne signed her own marriage bond:
The marriage could not have lasted long, as Mr. Turberville died in 1798.
Would be interested in sharing info on the Rogers family below. Thanks.

2 William Henry Rogers
hi. i went looking for information this past week and i am a descendent of william henry rogers going back generations, but i do need to look into it more.. love to know the genealogy more.
In case you are interested:
William Luttrell Rogers and his father-in-law is (most probably) mentioned in a letter from Zelie Passavant to her daughter Emma (Zelienople; May 22, 1824). Zelie writes several paragraphs about the visit of “Mr. Rogers” at her estate, “a Philadelphian, accustomed to the luxurious table of his father in law, a Virginia Planter.”
I highly appreciate your information provided about Anna Ballantine Murphy and her father, because we are looking for full names and dates of people mentioned in some of Zelie’s letters.
Thank you again,
Oliver
Thanks for your note about Zelie Passavant! I am glad to hear the page has provided you some useful information!

So, did John Murphy and Anna Ballantine have a child named John Joseph Murphy who married a Rachel McGiffin? And, are you referring to a place called Ayrfield, Virginia…?
Forget the stupid second question…I see you are referring to Virginia. I am trying to find information about one of my ancestors named John Murphy who married an Anna Ballentine in Westmoreland, VA and fought in the War of 1812. But according to my family’s records, they had a son named John Joseph Murphy, who married a Rachel A. McGiffin. John Joseph was supposedly born about 1803-4
Yes, Ayrfield is a home in Westmoreland County, VA.
I do not think this is the John Murphy you seek. The first John Murphy (my 3x great grandfather) in this family married John Ballantine’s daughter, Anne in 1787. They had several children (see here: John Murphy), none of them being John Joseph Murphy. They did have a son named John Ballantine Murphy (b. 1790), who was my great great grandfather.
As far as I can tell, and I have fairly good records, there was no John Joseph Murphy in this family. Was he also a Scot? This is not an Irish family of Murphys, but a Scots one.
They are primarily Irish. A few lived abroad. Man, it will be so disappointing if this isn’t the connection I was looking for. Findagrave.com has the spelling for Anne’s last name as Ballentine too…The problem is I don’t see a reason why John Joseph Murphy would have been left off of the records… I think I even found the 1810 & 1820 censuses for John Murphy in Westmoreland, but they simply list how many people lived in the house under the age or over the age of –. The problem is, both censuses do not list the age group for free white males that would have included John Joseph…
OK, I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is definitely not the Murphy family you are looking for. This family was distinctly Scottish, not Irish. I know them well, as I grew up in Ayrfield myself and descended directly from them. This is not the family of John Joseph Murphy.
Btw, did you see this?

Hehehe – not only have I seen it, I have a copy of the letter Mrs. Lee sent my grandfather (Marvin Murphy) inquiring about the “ghost” and also a copy of the letter he sent in reply. 😉
I also have a copy of the book.
Where is the Ayrfield Cemetery and old footprint of the Ayrfield Plantation located? Can’t seem to find on any maps.
